Thursday’s Top 5: Mets keep winning baseball games – ESPN (blog)

  • 1. Carlos Torres, New York Mets: What a day for the Mets reliever. First, he pitched 2⅓ scoreless innings to get the win in the Mets’ 9-5 win in 13 innings over the Philadelphia Phillies. He also participated in this amazing 1-3-1 putout, when the ball ricocheted off his foot to Daniel Murphy, who made a great flip to Torres to get the out. Torres then got the four-run rally in the 13th started when he showed good speed down the line to get an infield hit. The Mets have now won seven straight, went 8-1 on this road trip, are 18-6 in August, improved to 12-1 against the Phillies and now head home to face the Boston Red Sox and then the Phillies again. Happy times in Queens.

    2. Madison Bumgarner, San Francisco Giants: Yes, just like last year, MadBum is heating up in August. He gave up two hits in six innings with 12 K’s as the Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 9-1. He didn’t hit a home run, although he did go 1-for-2. His five starts in August: 5-0, 37 2/3 IP, 23 H, 6 R, 0 HR, 4 BB, 53 SO. Watch out, Dodgers.

    3. Zack Greinke, Los Angeles Dodgers: OK, then. Greinke had another masterful outing with seven scoreless innings — lowering his ERA to 1.61 — as the Dodgers defeated the Cincinnati Reds 1-0. Greinke has now allowed zero runs in 10 of his 26 starts and zero or one run in 18 starts. He’s 14-3 but has seven no-decisions when allowing one run or fewer. Watch out, Giants.

    4. Chicago White Sox throwbacks: So ugly they’re good.

    5. Matt Shoemaker, Los Angeles Angels: After giving up 13 runs in two starts on Aug. 10 and 15, Shoemaker was demoted to Triple-A for one start to work on mechanical adjustments. He returned to his hometown of Detroit — he grew up 30 miles south — and threw a gem, giving up one hit in 7⅓ scoreless frames as the Angels beat the Detriot Tigers 2-0. “This was unbelievably special,” Shoemaker said. “To get a win for this team, and do in front of tons of friends and family. It was great.”
