Disastrous week for British cycling ends on a positive note with Tour de Yorkshire’s thrilling final stage – Telegraph.co.uk

They were treated to a classic; Thomas Voeckler, the flamboyant French veteran who now rides for Direct Energie, eventually prevailing, winning in a two-up sprint from Team Sky’s Nicolas Roche to take the stage win and general classification honours.

Organisers Welcome to Yorkshire and Amaury Sport Organisation, though,were simply relieved that for the first time all weekend nothing went wrong.

The race had looked cursed by the general malaise afflicting British cycling last week.  After days of negative headlines concerning the spectacular implosion within cycling’s national governing body, the resignation of technical director Shane Sutton, and a positive drugs test for a British rider Simon Yates, the Tour de Yorkshire began on Friday to a backdrop of snow and hail. Sir Bradley Wiggins, the biggest name in the race, abandoned on the first day.
