Sports Illustrated picks Ravens to win Super Bowl 50 – Baltimore Sun
Hop on the hype train, Baltimore.
At a time when locals seem to be most concerned with the health of first-round pick Breshad Perriman and generally blasé about the preseason in general, the Ravens have the distinct honor of being Sports Illustrated’s pick to win Super Bowl 50.
The pick comes courtesy of writer Greg Bedard, who wrote that while they need some luck with the secondary and skill position health on offense, the Ravens are due some good fortune.
“That’s the type of rationale that last year led me to pick the Patriots to play the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX,” Bedard wrote. “New England had fallen in the previous year’s AFC title game with a rash of injuries; just a few healthy players would have pushed them to the top.
“They won it all last year, but remember: They needed total health and some well-timed trickery to get past a beat-up Ravens team in the divisional playoff game. If Baltimore has health on its side, this team has the toughness to march through a wide-open AFC.”
Bedard, who picked the Ravens to win the AFC North at 11-5, has them taking a route to the big game fans will likely love — a wild-card win at home over the Pittsburgh Steelers, a road divisional-round win against the Patriots, and a win at the Denver Broncos in the AFC championship game over former offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak.
Bedard cited the Ravens’ record in traveling to New England in January, and said their stout front seven can shut down Seattle’s ground game in the Super Bowl.
“Baltimore is the most well-rounded team, one that has a lot to prove given how last season ended,” he wrote.
So there it is. Not an outlandish pick at all, but given the general vibe surrounding the Ravens, a bit of a bold one considering, as he said, everything that needs to go right. Let us know what you think of it in the comments section. Spot on, a long shot, or somewhere in between?
