Sports Personality of the Year 2016: Laura Trott and Jason Kenny lead the glamour – Daily Mail

They are tipped for big honours in the New Year’s Honours list.

And Jason Kenny and Laura Trott led the glamour as they arrived at the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Awards at Birmingham’s Genting Arena on Sunday.

The Rio Olympic cyclists, who married in a secret ceremony in September, turned heads in their glamorous cocktail attire as the put on a loved-up display at the prestigious awards show – which saw Andy Murray crowned the Sports Personality Of The Year.

Track cyclist Jason, 28, looked sharp in a navy suit and matching tie, teaming it with a crisp white shirt.

The six-time Olympic gold medalist proudly held on to his new wife Laura, 24, smiling as they cuddled up together on the red carpet.

Track and road cyclist Laura wore her blonde tresses in long tumbling waves, adding a touch of blusher, festive eyeshadow and bold brows.

The couple already have OBEs but according to The Mirror are likely to receive something ‘big’ in the the 2017 honours list.

 Power couple: The Rio Olympic cyclists, who married in a secret ceremony in September, are the first ever couple to be nominated for the annual award

A source told the paper: ‘Jason is likely to be given a knighthood and Laura will probably be made a dame. They are very much the poster couple of this year’s honours.

‘The whole thing is going to be dominated by sports stars but Laura and Jason are the standouts.’

However, the couple were beaten to the grand prize on the night by Andy Murray, who also won in 2013 and 2015, as he was crowned the Sports Personality Of The Year.

The Scot, 29, who is the first person to win the prize on three separate occasions, was presented with his award at his training camp in Miami by Lennox Lewis.

‘I’d like to thank everyone who voted, I appreciate your support,’ said Andy as he was gifted his third title. ‘I’d like to thank my team, some of whom are here behind the camera in Miami. I really appreciate all your support.

‘I’d like to thank my family for all their support, I think my mum’s their in the crowd and my dad too, he just got married 10 days ago.’

Taking time to thanks his wife, the star quipped: ‘I’d also like to thank my wife for all her support over the years.I have a bit of a bone to pick with my wife as she told me she’d voted for Nick Skelton… not a smart move with Christmas coming up!

Back in London the great and the good of the sporting and celebrity worlds turned out for the event, Ore Oduba and Portia Oduba made an attractive couple as they posed for pictures on the red carpet.

Sports presenter Ore, who won Strictly Come Dancing in Saturday’s dramatic final, added festive glitz to his suit, sporting a sequin encrusted blazer. 

His wife of one year, Portia, flaunted her slender physique in a figure-hugging white dress.

Cinched in at her waist, the piece showcased her fabulous physique to perfection. 

Meanwhile Tom Daley joined in on the red carpet action, opting for turned-up black jeans and a casual camouflage T-shirt. 

The 22-year-old British diver won bronze in the synchronized 10m platform with Daniel Goodfellow during the Olympics. 

Leicester City football player Jamie Vardy looked sharp in a blue suit and coordinating tie. 

His pregnant wife Rebekah, who he married this year, accompanied him on the red carpet. 

Showcasing her blossoming baby bump in a fitted off-the-shoulder Bardot style black dress, she added a touch of glamour with delicate silver strappy sandals and an opulent necklace.

Another attractive couple on the red carpet were American former swimmer Michael Phelps, 31, and his new wife Nicole Johnson, a 31-year-old model. 

The duo  coordinated in black ensembles, with Michael teaming a black suit and checked shirt while Nicole rocked a plunging sequin-encrusted black gown.

Putting on a glamorous appearance, the brunette beauty added height in silver glittery shoes and a choker necklace.

Michael was in a jubilant mood as he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by HRH Prince William, who proclaimed he was the ‘greatest athlete in history’.

The swimming legend was clearly overawed by the moment, and described 2016 as a ‘dream come true’, wrapping up his speech, he declared it was an ‘honour’ to pick-up the gong in front of his fellow athletes. 

Bradley Lowery, five, was another special guest at the event, and the little boy – who has neuroblastoma – looked delighted as he arrived on the red carpet with his parents, Gemma and Carl.

The terminally ill youngster, whose cancer battle began in 2013, was full of smiles as he shared the limelight with some of the best and brightest athletes in the UK.

The young lad, who has neuroblastoma, is expected to have to undergo another round of chemotherapy in 2017 to battle the disease.

Another inspiring figure at the ceremony was Ellie Robinson, 15, who slipped into a pretty lilac dress and black strappy flats as she picked up the Young Sports Personality Of The Year Award.

Long Distance runner and former winner of the Sports Personality Of The Year Award Paula Radcliffe, MBE, sizzled in a deep purple satin gown as she arrived at the awards.

The event was hosted by BBC favourites Gabby Logan, Gary Lineker and Clare Balding, who combined their respective talents to host the event.

Robbie William was amongst the many stars from the Entertainments world who attended the event, with the chart-topping singer performing his latest single, Love My Life.  

The winner of the 2016 Sports Personality Of The Year will be announced live on BBCOne at around 8.50pm.
