Tigers’ McCann sports his Arkansas pride with jacket – Detroit Free Press
College football was back this weekend, and Tigers catcher James McCann showed his support Saturday for the Arkansas Razorbacks when he tweeted a photo of his latest jacket.
The cardinal and white jacket looks like something hockey commentator Don Cherry â known for his outlandish suits â would wear. McCann said he got the jacket from ESPN sportscaster John Buccigross.
“He was on “SportsCenter” earlier in the season when we were in Anaheim, and he was wearing that same jacket,” McCann said of Buccigross. “He was wearing it for (golfer) John Daly’s birthday, because he’s an Arkansas guy. And so I tweeted him and said, ‘Hey, where I can get that jacket? Where can I get a jacket like that?’ He said, ‘How about I just send you this one. I’m never going to wear it again.’ “
A few weeks passed and the jacket never came, so McCann â who played baseball at Arkansas â figured he wasn’t going to get it.
“Then I hit the walk-off against the White Sox, and (Buccigross) messaged me and said, ‘Hey, watch SportsCenter tonight,” McCann said. “He ended up making me one of his stars of the night, and he was wearing that jacket and he said, ‘I’m sorry I procrastinated, but this will be in your locker by the end of the week.’ “
Several Tigers were sporting colors of their favorite football team Saturday, so McCann was proud of his jacket.
“A lot of people laughed,” McCann said.
McCann said he’ll proudly wear it again and again.
“That’s GameDay attire right there,” McCann said.
â Gose goes fast: Anthony Gose is still learning how to steal bases. He had 20 entering Saturday, a career high. He had 15 last season and 15 as a rookie in 2013 with Toronto.
“He’s got the speed, but there’s a little bit of an art form to stealing bases,” manager Brad Ausmus said. “When you’re that fast, people are very aware of you. You have to either learn to pick your spots or really learn to read the pitcher. You can’t outrun the baseball at the major league level. … So, I think he’s still learning. We talk to him about it quite a bit.”
