Blood Flow Occlusion Training, or Blood Flow Restriction Training, is the method of building lean muscle by restricting blood flow. Sounds counterintuitive, right? For years we've been told the only way to build muscle is to increase blood flow, but occlusion training is proving that the opposite has an extremely effective anabolic effect. The beauty of occlusion training is that it doesn't require training with heavy weight. In fact, occlusion training can increase muscle size and strength with as little as 20% of your 1 rep max. Here's how it works: Your slow twitch (low potential for growth) muscle fibers have a high resistance to fatigue, require oxygen from blood, and are the first to contract during exercise. Your fast twitch (high potential for growth) muscle fibers do not require oxygen, contract last, and have a low resistance to fatigue. By restricting blood flow to the muscles you are pre-fatiguing the slow twitch fibers, forcing the fast twitch fibers to handle the load - even at low intensities! Strapping up is quick and easy.
